Ghost Note

Ghost Note is based on my own memories and observations of a flock of sparrows at my family home in Switzerland. The installation Ghost Note focuses on the verbalization of our recollections. I want to investigate, whether the phenomenon of memory escapes language altogether and whether one can talk about memories without employing the concept of forms and colours.

In music theory, ghost notes are quiet or intermediary beats that add groove and dynamics to a rhythm. My project investigates this concept both content-wise and methodically. It focuses on the unspoken, the implied, the pauses, the stumbling and hesitations, which are essential components of our memory and significantly influence how we think, act, and understand the world. This includes highlighting „empty strings,“ or ghost notes, such as those used in guitar playing just before the next note to rhythmically prepare for it. In my project Ghost Note I illustrate the unspoken, the implied, the pauses and the hesitation - the verbalization of memory.
